AGE in place

National Aging in Place Week is this week, October 12-20, 2015. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) defines aging in place as “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level.” According to the Journal of Housing for the Elderly, it means not having to move from one’s present residence in order to secure necessary support services in response to changing need.

A 2009 AARP survey revealed that 85% of all Americans over the age of 65 would like to stay in their own homes as they age. The good news is that approximately 70% of seniors spend the rest of their lives in the place where they celebrated their 65th birthday.

In order to age at home, many older adults need assistance and that is the core of Kadan Homecare’s business. At Kadan, we celebrate National Aging in Place Week each October to help expand awareness of the aging in place movement and to promote the means for seniors to remain in their homes for as long as they want to.

This year, the U.S. “will have more than 45 million households with people from 51 to 70 years old, compared with 25 million for the previous generation,” according to the National Aging in Place Council. As we age, we may have changes in our health that results in a need for assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing or eating. We may also experience a progressive chronic illness such as Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease, or a health change due to a debilitating accident or event, like a stroke. In short, we may not be able to live independently without some assistance. The demand for high quality services is clear.
