Happy New Year! You likely spent time with loved ones over the holiday season, which can be enjoyable but may also be stressful if you notice that the health, financial situation and/or overall well-being of family members, particularly those who are aging, has deteriorated. If that’s the case, it’s probably time to have some difficult conversations and make some changes.

Did you notice any of the following?:

  • Your loved one’s house was messier than normal
  • Food in the refrigerator has gone bad
  • Mom or Dad’s appearance is different such as weight loss or frailty
  • Your loved one’s hygiene is lacking
  • Bills have piled up with some not even opened
  • Appliances are broken
  • The bathroom is cluttered and grimy
  • Maintenance of the home has been neglected
  • Appointments have been missed

These observations don’t necessarily mean that your loved one requires care, but if you noticed multiple things on the list, it is time to look deeper into the situation and create a plan for improvement.

It is critically important that the senior feel like they have a say in the plan for the future. Be sure they know that you want to do anything you can to maintain their way of life. Listen to their desires and concerns. For most seniors, their primary wish is to be able to remain in their home. Homecare companies, like Kadan, do see an uptick in inquiries and consultations following the holidays.

If you find yourself considering in-home care, please be certain to ask the necessary questions. At Kadan, we call them the “essential questions” and we’ve put a list of them together for potential clients.
