In November of 2005, National Geographic magazine issued its third-largest selling issue in the magazine’s history. On its cover? “The Secrets of Living Longer.”

There was so much interest, the magazine encouraged writer Dan Buettner to pen a book on the subject called The Blue Zones.

The book visits extraordinarily long-lived communities around the globe, called Blue Zones. People in these communities live longer, healthier lives than just about anyone else on Earth. They reach age 100 at ten times the average rate. What’s their secret?

According to Buettner, the recipe for robust and thriving longevity is deeply intertwined with lifestyle, diet, outlook and stress-coping practices that encourage us to have purpose and productivity long into our triple-digit years.

One example from the book is Stamatis Moraitis, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in his mid-60s. Rather than stay in America during his final nine months to live, Moraitis and his wife moved back to their native Ikaria, where Moraitis planted a garden, re-engaged with old friends and regularly hobbled up the hill to a tiny chapel to meditate. He built up the family vineyard until it produced 400 gallons of wine a year. His doctors can’t explain what happened to his cancer. Today, he is 102.

With the Blue Zones as an inspiring backdrop, we at Kadan Homecare are committed to assisting elderly wherever they may live – including encouraging lifestyles that lead your family member to a richer, healthier life.
