Reflections on 40 Years of Personalized Homecare

When Linda Kadan started Kadan Homecare in 1984, the company only had one employee and a few caregivers on staff. At the time, home health services were a nascent component of the health care spectrum, and there were only a handful of companies offering home-based caregiving. Yet, she recognized that more and more Americans would be aging in the coming decades, and families would need relief and respite from bearing the demands of caregiving by themselves. She was driven by a vision of building a home care agency for families that cared for their senior loved ones as if they were her own family. This vision propelled her to become a trailblazer for homecare in the Atlanta market.

While it’s tough for independent, family-owned businesses to make it to the 40-year mark, with many home care companies getting acquired by large, national corporations, Kadan Homecare continues to thrive as a locally owned Atlanta business. Today, Kadan has served more than 3,000 families and boasts a staff of more than 350 caregivers and office personnel.

Four Lessons from Four Decades of Caregiving

  1. Through the years, we’ve learned that to make aging in place at home possible, it’s important to plug into and understand the entire family structure. Our approach to matching caregivers with clients is at the forefront of our care. We know that while individuals may have similar health issues, their care situation is as unique as they are. Kadan caregivers are often the glue that connects extended families, blended families and families spread over several states. Having a caregiver available to visit and assess the senior in his or her home environment has proven a successful model for giving a family peace of mind while supporting the parent who wishes to live out life in the comfort of home.
  2. Today, we know that loneliness and isolation are major factors in seniors’ health, and consistent companion care for the elderly and respite care for the family can make a huge difference in health outcomes.
  3. When it comes to optimizing the health and wellbeing of seniors, Kadan has also learned the importance of continuing education, particularly when it comes to dementia care and patient care. The more we know as caregivers, the better we can support our clients and their families.
  4. The standard of care for older Americans has also changed in response to new technologies developed over the course of our four decades in business. Technology can now be used to improve safety outcomes at home or manage medications, for example. In addition, new virtual technology is making it possible for caregivers or family members to experience what dementia is like and how an empathic person-centered care environment can make a world of difference. Kadan’s President Dina White and Kahloe Lesaca, RN have become Virtual Dementia Tour – Certified Trainers through Second Wind Dreams.

These awards are a testament to Kadan’s longevity and reputation in serving the Atlanta community.

Caring for Families as Only Family Can

From its earliest days, the company has pursued its mission of delivering a standard of excellence in care that is equal to, or above, what a family would provide for their loved one themselves. Kadan Homecare prides itself in working with families to create customized care plans for whatever setting their loved one calls ‘home.’

Kadan Homecare considers it a privilege and honor to care for seniors and their families over the past 40 years and looks forward to serving others for many years to come. We’re very thankful for the families who have trusted us with caring for their loved ones, and are grateful for our team of caregivers and social workers who make a difference every day for our clients. Caregivers like Gladys, who celebrated 30 years of service this past year, illustrate the strong bonds that can form between a caregiver and client. We’re also thankful to be part of a referral network of support that includes elder law experts, hospice professionals and Aging Life Care Managers.
