The Time is Right for Social Work

March is Social Work Month, and we salute the important services that social workers offer in our society, particularly for senior citizens. This year’s theme is, “The Time is Right for Social Work,” a nod to the fact that social services are more valuable than ever as our society copes with current economic and social challenges.

According to the National Association of Social Workers, the social work profession has existed for more than a century, and it attracts people who have a strong desire to help others overcome any issues that prevent them from reaching their full potential. You’ll find social workers called to help people locate financial assistance, improve their relationships and family systems, tackle mental health challenges, and address needs in their communities.

For seniors, social workers can provide several benefits:

Preparation and planning for the aging process
Social workers who are engaged in senior services, including homecare, are often able to guide families as they navigate the experience of helping an aging loved one for the first time. Most families don’t fully understand what will be needed as the senior’s life continues to change. A social worker can help assess the senior’s medical, physical, social and emotional needs to develop a holistic plan of care.

Guidance after a medical event
After a medical procedure or health event, it’s not always possible for the senior to return to their customary living environment. For example, short-term rehabilitation may be needed following a surgery. Social workers can help families understand what to expect after their senior is discharged from the hospital and what accommodations and interventions will best help them recover.

Intervention when an older adult may be suffering from abuse or neglect
The social work profession has equipped social workers with tools to help identify, address and prevent elder abuse.

As the country continues to emerge from the effects of the pandemic and rebuild its social fabric, it’s clear that the time truly is right for social work. We are grateful for social workers’ efforts to look out for the best interests of seniors and help them live healthier lives.
